I want my rabbit to have babies but my mom said that the firs batch of rabbits they die because the mom doesn’t know how to take care of them is this true please reply soon thanks…
Hi…I’ve been raising and showing rabbits for 10 years. That’s not always the case, but it is pretty common for first time mothers to have a little trouble knowing what to do. She could have them outside the nestbox, reject them, etc… But if you keep a close eye on the doe when she is due most things are preventable or if she doesn’t take care of them you can hold the babies up to her to feed once or twice a day depending on how well they eat. You can tell your mom that is an old wive’s tale….kind of. It is by no means a law. The great majority of my does do absolutely fine with their first litters and are great mothers. You do need to be prepared for the fact that breeding rabbits (or any animal) is not all nice, warm, and fuzzy. It can be a real frustrating and heart breaking endeavor so be prepared and do your research.
I strongly suggest reading the book Storey’s Guide to Raising Rabbits by Bob Bennett and joining the ARBA. With membership, you’ll get their handbook and a subscription to Domestic Rabbits magazine. Also consider joining your local 4H club and doing the rabbit project "course of study". You’ll learn loads, meet other kids with pet rabbits, and have fun with your rabbit. You can also make a more informed decision as to whether or not breeding is for you and your rabbit.
