are lionhead rabbits good for show rabbits?

Add comments

i heard on one of my other ? that lionheads are good show rabbits then some one else said there not help!!!!!
some one said you have to own a nother bread to with them is that true

I was the one who answered that they were not good show rabbits, and if you read the rest of the post I also explained why. The lionhead is NOT a breed of rabbit. As of now, people are developing the features and trying to get the ARBA to recognize the lionhead as an official breed of rabbit. I would not get into lionheads unless you know quite a bit about genetics and are willing to go through much trial and error for a breed that you can't even really show with the 4H. If you like lionheads, but are interested in show your rabbits, I would suggest raising Jersey Woolies. They are as close to a lionhead as you can get, and they are a recognized breed that comes in many beautiful colors.

What I said earlier was that, if you choose to raise lionheads, you should also get another breed of rabbit. This is because, with a lionhead, you would have to show them as a mixed breed rabbit through the 4H, which does not make them eligible for any major awards. If you want to breed lionheads, I would suggest getting a breed that is already recognized by the ARBA so that you can actually have some hope of doing well in the breed class.

I have seen from experience. Unless you go out and buy a VERY high quality animal, some run of the mill mixed breed will beat it. This past year, at my 4H fair, I had a Flemish Giant/New Zealand cross that I was showing as a mixed breed. There was also a kid who was showing her lionheads. Long story short, my mixed breed beat all of her lionheads because they are not being judged on an actual breed standard.

Heed my warning or not, what ever breed of rabbit you choose is your decision alone.

I think that it depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into them. Lionheads need lots of grooming to keep them in tip-top show shape.
I think that Rex's make really great show rabbits, if you are open to different breeds. They come in Miniature and Standard sizes. They have great extremely soft fur, and are easily groomed for shows. You just rub them with a towel. lol.

I used to show my rabbit (a rex) and it really doesn't take to much work to show them.

You have to trim their nails and with a Lionhead, you will have to groom it too.

This rabbit is new I have not shown rabbits in 7 years, but after looking it up it is really cute.
Seeing that it is a long hair rabbit you would have to make sure that it is groomed to perfection. Check your local ARBA to make sure that it is an accepted breed. According to Wikipedia it is not accepted by the ARBA yet.
Showing rabbits is a lot of work, grooming has to be perfect and they have to meet certian restrictions and criteria. I had a rabbit once that was born with an inperfection I was unaware of (she was missing a toe) and I was disqualified, otherwies her markings were perfect. So make sure that you check the criteria for showing, you can check with the local ARBA or 4H group.
    Hope this helps.
